Weee Regulations
WEEE stands for “Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment” and it encompasses a wide range of equipment used in homes, offices, shops and hospitals to name but a few. The WEEE Regulations came into force on 2nd January 2007 and it requires companies (known as Producers) that manufacture, import or brand electrical or electronic equipment (EEE) be financially responsible for recycling these products (and others under certain circumstances) when they reach their end-of-life.
All Producers have to be members of WEEE Compliance Schemes which facilitate the collection and recycling of WEEE for which Producers are obliged, by law, to finance. By forcing Producers to pay to collect and recycle WEEE, the law aims to reduce the amount of waste to landfill, minimise virgin materials used in manufacturing and motivate the introduction of green designs into equipment. The WEEE legislation also makes business final users i.e. organisations that use EEE, responsible for certain old WEEE when it reaches its end-of-life. In such circumstances, companies are required to ensure that the WEEE is recycled, rather than thrown away.
Electrocycle, has created a national collection and recycling infrastructure for the largest Compliance Scheme in the UK for non-household WEEE (www.b2bcompliance.org.uk). Our national infrastructure was originally established to service the customers of the Producer members of B2B Compliance (who place over £7 billion worth of EEE into the marketplace each year). We have extended this facility to other organisations that wish to recycle waste electronics on a cost-sharing basis.
